The Burning Question |
|
“Doran, how do you balance your personal life with your business life?” |
That’s a very good question, and the answer depends on a few things. How I balance my work and personal life now might not be the best approach for everyone.
You see, every business has “seasons”, and what season you are in determines how you manage your time. In the beginning of your business, when you’re first starting out, there is so much to do, and so much to learn.
When I was first starting out, I worked every Saturday, took no vacations, and I worked every holiday. Why? I was willing to pay the price for success. Also, because I had “buy in” from my family in advance, they knew what we were all sacrificing for. I also continually reassured them that 1) this was short-term, and 2) we would benefit from it as a family.
This was my “season” of imbalance when it came to work. I knew that massive action equals massive results. I asked myself “What’s the price I have to pay for success” and then I paid it.
Go ahead. Be unbalanced at first! Throw yourself into the business and take action. There will come a season when you can slow down and implement process.
Soon, my work started paying off. I was making more money, and I started to see the fruits of my labor. I was faced with a dilemma that is often challenging for people who start to see success. It’s really tempting to keep working at that insane pace when you see that it is working. You figure, “Hey. If a little is good, a lot must be better.”
I had made promises to my family, though. I’d told them that when the “season” ended, I would scale back and spend more time with them. For me, it was a matter of integrity.
Frankly, the network marketing business is designed this way. In the beginning, you need to work quite hard, the business model is such that as you build your downline, you can then move into the next “season”. Balancing your life means knowing which season you are in and behaving accordingly.
